Backstory
The current design of the Italian flag was adopted on June 19, 1798, inspired by the French Tricolour. The colors are said to represent hope (green), faith (white), and charity/love (red), or alternatively, the green of the country's plains and hills, the white of the Alps, and the red of the blood shed in Italy's wars of independence. It was officially recognized as the national flag of the Italian Republic in 1948.
